The Beauty of Our Chaos
Part 1 - Cool Girl Is Game
Introduction / Next Part
I never thought I’d be the type of girl to join a sorority, but here I was, standing in the middle of Delta Nu’s impossibly pink common room, surrounded by girls who looked like they belonged on a Vogue cover. Mariel and I had just moved into our new room at UPenn, fresh-faced freshmen, and after weeks of plotting, we had somehow made it into the most sought-after house on campus.
“Can you believe we are here?” Mariel asked, plopping onto her bed with a dramatic sigh.
“Can you believe how long it’s gonna take me to defrost my fake smile?” I shot back.
To get in, I had to fake it till I made it. I wasn’t their first choice—not even close. Delta Nu girls had a certain effortless glow, and I was… well, I was a computer science major who spent most of time trying not to collapse. But with just the right amount of preppy outfits, carefully curated small talk, and a convincingly chirpy “Oh my god, totally” at rush events, I had squeezed my way in.
Before we could even start unpacking, Missy Houghton, our sorority president, breezed in with her perfect blowout and clipboard in hand.
“Ladies, welcome to Delta Nu! Just a quick reminder of your very busy Initiation Week schedule,” she said, handing us a printed itinerary. “Tonight, we have the Ceremony & Oath, Tuesday is Welcome to Pilates, Wednesday is New Me Conference, Thursday is our Fundraiser, and of course, Friday is our Newbie Initiation Tradition—which is a total surprise, so don’t even try asking.” She winked before twirling out of the room.
Mariel and I exchanged a look. What did we get ourselves into?
After taking a short walk from the house, we went our separate ways—Mariel to her graphic design classes, and me to my Introduction to Computer Programming lecture.
The moment I walked in, I knew this class was a walk in the park. The professor started going over variables and loops, and I could barely keep my eyes open. Then, just to make it really fun, he handed out a pop quiz on basic programming concepts.
I finished mine in record time, turned it in, and went back to doodling in my iPad. A few minutes later, I caught the professor glancing at my paper, then back at his computer. After class, he called me over.
“Miss (Y/L/N), right?” He adjusted his glasses, scanning my student file. “You’re this year’s full scholarship?”
I nodded.
“Hmm. Well, judging by this quiz, this class might be too easy for you. Have you considered taking a level test to skip ahead?”
It wasn’t a bad idea.
Following his instructions, I went to Student Service’s to request a level test—and, as expected, I placed two levels above. That meant I’d be in classes with sophomores now.
That night, as Mariel and I debriefed in our dorm about our day, she threw a pillow at me.
“You just got here, and you’re already skipping classes? How do you do it?!” she groaned.
I caught the pillow and tossed it back. “I didn’t do anything. I bet everyone was gushing over your art skills today.”
“Shut up, Miss Genius.” she interjected my explanation.
TUESDAY - 7 AM
The following morning, I walked into my new classroom with a printed letter from the department in hand. The professor beamed as I handed it over.
“And here she is,” he said dramatically, turning to the class. “Our newest addition! Not only is she here on a full scholarship, but she’s also skipped two levels, meaning she’s already putting you all under pressure!”
I gave a small, awkward wave. The room was silent.
Then it hit me.
I was the only girl in the room.
Great.
I sighed, found an empty seat, and tried to ignore the stares. It wasn’t my first time being in a male-dominated space, and it wouldn’t be my last. I tuned them out and focused on the lecture.
Or at least I tried.
After class, as I packed up my stuff, three guys walked over. One of them looked… familiar.
“Hey,” the curly-haired one said, tilting his head. “This might sound bad, but where do I know you from?”
I turned fully to face him. Thick eyebrows. Curls. That annoying but weirdly cute smile.
Memories flooded back.
I smirked. “Wow. You really do have a terrible memory, Jonas Brother.”
His friends lost it. One practically doubled over laughing.
“Ohhh,” one of them wheezed. “Dude, she got you.”
Luigi blinked, then finally connected the dots. “Oh shit. Nationals.”
“Took you long enough.”
His friends were still cracking up. One of them clapped him on the back. “Dude, you always know the hotter girls.”
I rolled my eyes.
“So what, you’re in this class now?” another one asked. “Why haven’t we seen you before?”
“Freshman,” I said, shouldering my bag.
Luigi was still looking at me, amusement playing at the corners of his lips. “So, you just happened to land in a level 3 class, huh?”
“Tragic, really,” I deadpanned.
“Seriously, though,” another chimed in. “You should come to one of our frat parties. Now that you’re officially in our class, you are one of us.”
I barely held back an eye roll. Of course they were in a frat.
“Cool,” I said vaguely, already looking at my phone. “Noted.”
Then I noticed the time.
“Crap. I gotta go,” I muttered, swinging my bag over my shoulder.
“Where to?” Luigi asked.
I sighed. “Pilates.”
One of the guys perked up and whistled. “Nice.”
I cringed.
I turned to leave, but as I walked away, I heard Luigi’s voice behind me.
“See ya around.”
Without looking back, I just raised a hand in a half-hearted wave.
“Okay,” I called over my shoulder.
WELCOME TO PILATES
The air in the studio was thick with the scent of lavender-scented disinfectant and the soft hum of an upbeat playlist. Mariel and I sat on our mats, stretching, surrounded by a dozen other Delta Nu girls. Apparently, as bonding activity we had to sign up for at least one group fitness class.
Honestly? The politics of this house were exhausting. But if faking enthusiasm for Pilates was the price I had to pay to stay in Delta Nu, so be it.
Mariel groaned as we attempted another core-strength move. “This is a requirement? What kind of sorority is this?”
“The type that values toned abs over GPAs,” I muttered, wobbling slightly.
She snorted. “At least you’re suffering with me.”
We both struggled to hold our position when I casually dropped, “Oh, by the way, guess who’s in my new class?”
Mariel barely glanced at me, too focused on not collapsing. “Unless it’s the ghost of Steve Jobs here to give you a job at Apple, I don’t care.”
I smirked. “Luigi”
She blinked. “Mario?”
I chuckled quietly, my arms shaking from exertion. “The Jonas Brother.”
Mariel’s eyes went wide. She lost balance completely, flopping onto her mat. “OMG, this is destiny,” she whisper-screamed.
I shot her a look. “What?”
“Be honest,” she accused, regaining her composure. “Did you move from Cali to be close to him?”
I rolled my eyes. “Callatee.. you know why I chose UPenn over UCLA. And you came with me, remember?” (Shut up)
She laughed. “I’m kidding.” Then she tilted her head. “Wait… what’s his actual name again?”
I paused. “Luigi… I don’t know his last name.”
From my right, another girl—blonde, toned, and effortlessly balanced in the Pilates pose I had given up on—leaned in slightly and whispered, “Sorry, are you talking about Luigi Mangione?”
I turned to her. “Not sure.”
“Curly hair? Italian? STEM guy?”
Mariel and I exchanged a look. “Yeah,” I said.
She grinned knowingly. “Ohhh.”
I frowned. “What does that mean?”
She giggled, lowering herself gracefully into the next pose. “Just don’t let Missy stop you. She’s been trying for a year.”
I nearly dropped my balance again. “Stop me? From what?”
Mariel and the girl—who I now realized was named Kaylee—both gave me the same amused look.
I blinked. “What?”
Kaylee just shook her head, still smirking. “Nothing.”
Mariel’s smirk was even worse.
Between boys and core training, I wasn’t sure which task I sucked at more.
WEDNESDAY - NEW ME
Blah blah blah
THURSDAY- FUNDRAISER BOOTH
Pink. So much pink.
I glanced around at the Delta Nu booth, which looked like a sorority version of Mean Girls—pink banners, white ribbons, pastel decorations. It was all very on brand, and all very not me.
The only thing remotely acceptable in my wardrobe was a pair of white shorts and a band tee. Missy was not pleased.
“Don’t you have anything pink that is actually cute?” she asked, looking at me like I’d personally insulted her ancestors.
Mariel, clapped a hand on my shoulder. “She can borrow something of mine!”
I shot her a look. “Girl, where is my ass gonna fit in your clothes?”
She grinned. “Don’t insult your Latina hips.”
I laughed, but it didn’t change the fact that I was still stuck in a Blondie tee while everyone else looked like they’d walked out of a Tampon commercial. Whatever. It wasn’t like I’d chosen this sorority for the aesthetic.
We finally made it to the booth, where Missy explained the actual reason we were here—raising money for charity.
Noble. Love that.
Then came the catch.
Next month, Delta Nu was hosting a fashion show, and each of us had to raise money. The girl who raised the most money would win the ability to keep her own outfit from a designer catalog. Meanwhile, the rest of us? Our outfits would be chosen for us by our highest donor.
I blinked. “What the hell?” I muttered under my breath.
Did I accidentally join a brothel?
Mariel choked on a laugh next to me.
Students stopped by our booth throughout the afternoon, reading about the charity and looking at the fashion show details. Most were supportive. Some donated out of actual generosity. Others… not so much.
Cue Gym Bro.
This dude—overly tan, protein shake in hand, and all biceps—strolled up and made a significant donation. Not for charity, of course. No, he had one goal.
“To see her in lingerie,” he said with a smirk, nodding in my direction.
If looks could kill, Gym Bro wouldn’t just be dead—he’d be erased from history.
Before I could tell him exactly where he could shove his donation, a familiar voice interrupted.
“Well, well, not only is she smart, but she’s into the crazy life.”
I turned to see frat bros approaching the booth, all smug grins and easy confidence. Damien, was the one who spoke, looking at me like I’d just confirmed a long-standing theory about my secret double life.
“Surprise,” I deadpanned. “Delta Nu.”
Luigi smirked. “I should’ve predicted it from the Barbie Dreamhouse.”
I raised an eyebrow. “That Barbie Dreamhouse kicked your ass.”
He tilted his head, amused. “Now you’re coming for my reputation?”
Before the tension could build further, Mariel cut in.
“Damn, Jonas Brother, you got tall.”
Luigi glanced at her, clearly recognizing her face but not placing the name.
He snapped his fingers. “St. Trinity. Right?”
Bingo.
His friends took the opportunity to introduce themselves, wanting to get ahead of the game. Gross.
They asked about the charity, and we explained.
Of course, their intrigue had nothing to do with charity and everything to do with the fashion show. Free sorority girls on a runway? Predictable.
I sighed. “You’re late. Jerk-face over there already donated a lot to see me in lingerie.”
The guys gushed among themselves, clearly entertained.
Damien grinned. “Damn, we can’t surpass that.”
“You could’ve saved me,” I said dramatically.
“Too late now.”
“At least I can mentally prepare.”
Before they could continue their antics, Missy appeared out of nowhere, her signature flirty smile locked in on Luigi.
“Hey stranger” she greeted, voice a little too smooth.
He responded politely, but I could tell he wasn’t particularly invested.
“What brings you here?” she asked, brushing her hair over her shoulder.
“Oh, just saying hi,” he said, nodding at me.
Missy’s eyes narrowed slightly as she turned to me. “Ohhh, you guys know each other?”
I shrugged. “Old foes. And we have the same coding class.”
Missy blinked. “Right. So, are you coming to the show?”
He hesitated. “I think I have lab hours.”
Missy pouted slightly but played it cool. “No prob, we can talk later.”
Mariel and I barely held in our laughter.
Missy got called away, leaving the rest of us in her wake. The moment she was gone, Mariel and I mocked her voice in unison.
“So nice to see you,” we mimicked, fluttering our eyelashes.
The guys chuckled, clearly enjoying the show.
But then, Luigi checked his phone. “We should head back to our booth.”
As they started walking away, he turned back, smirking at me.
“I guess next class, we’ll see who’s the better coder.”
I smirked right back.
Yeah, you better run.
FRIDAY - INITIATION
By the time sun sets, I was already regretting my life choices.
Mariel and I sat cross-legged on our beds, nerves sitting like lead in our stomachs. We were under strict orders to come straight back to the sorority house after classes, no questions asked.
At 6:50 p.m., the call came.
“Newbies, to the living room!”
Mariel shot me a wide-eyed look. “This is it. We’re either going to become legends or complete social pariahs.”
“Maybe both,” I muttered, standing and smoothing down my jeans.
We shuffled into the living room where the superior sisters, Missy, and the house mother were lined up in matching black caped robes, holding envelopes like they were about to announce a Hunger Games death match.
Missy’s smile was almost predatory. “Welcome to your Initiation.”
A nervous murmur rippled through the room.
Missy stepped forward. “This is a scavenger hunt. You will each have five hours to complete a series of tasks. Some will be… challenging.”
That should’ve been the first red flag.
She continued, “For proof, you’ll need to take pictures and submit them before midnight. Fail to complete the list, and you risk losing your spot at Delta Nu.”
The room collectively stiffened.
“The prize?” Missy’s smile sharpened. “You stay and earn the respect of your sisters.”
I didn’t care about the “respect” part. I did care about my scholarship. I needed to stay in Delta Nu to keep it.
She handed out envelopes. “Good luck, girls.”
I opened mine and scanned the list.
Some were easy. Others? Not so much:
• Collect a pair of boxers from a frat president and have him sign it
“What the hell?” I whispered to Mariel.
“I’m not touching any guy’s used underwear,” she hissed.
“Me neither,” I said. But we both knew that wasn’t true. I had to complete this.
When the timer started, we all scattered.
I powered through the easy ones first:
✅ Apply a full face of makeup to a campus statue? Done.
✅ Selfie with a Professor? Easy.
✅ Steal a traffic cone? On my arm.
Then I hit the wall: the boxer situation.
I sat on a campus bench, scrolling through my phone, looking up the frat presidents. Maybe this was my end. Not knowing how to seduce a guy out of his panties.
And there it was.
Luigi Mangione - Phi Kappa Psi.
Of course he was president. Because the universe hated me.
I opened Instagram to look him up. Luckily for me his profile was public and his latest story showed he was at the school gym.
“Great,” I muttered. “Guess I’m about to enter my villain era.”
I took a breath and ran to the gym, showing my student ID to the desk clerk, who barely glanced up before waving me through. Apparently, they were used to sorority girls losing their minds during initiation week.
I spotted him almost immediately, walking toward the showers with a towel over his shoulder.
I froze. My heart pounded.
I could leave. I could figure something else out.
But the timer was ticking.
Nope. I’m doing this.
I marched toward the men’s locker room. A couple of guys gave me side-eyes as I walked in.
“Sorry! Emergency!” I said, which only made it more suspicious.
My heart was practically pounding out of my chest as I stopped outside the shower stall. I knocked on the wall.
“Kinda busy, man,” Luigi’s voice called. “There are other showers.”
I took a deep breath. “Oh, I know that.”
There was a long pause. Then:
“…hi?”
Luigi’s head peeked out from the stall, water dripping from his curls. He blinked. “What the hell are you doing in here?”
I turned my face toward the wall, covering my eyes. “I know this looks like the setup for a cheap porno, but I swear it’s not what it looks like.”
He smirked. “It looks pretty compromising.”
“Trust me, it’ll get worse.” I sighed. “I need a favor.”
He rinsed his face and wiped his hands down his chest.
“Let me get the shampoo out of my eyes, and then we’ll talk.”
“Okay.” I stood there, face still covered.
A minute later, the shower stopped. A damp hand brushed my shoulder.
“You can look now.”
I peeked through my fingers and saw him standing there in a towel, hair dripping. Men’s Health prepared me for moments like this.
“Initiations have gotten cheeky,” he joked.
“I need your underwear,” I blurted.
He raised his brows. “Come again?”
I forced myself to explain the task. He listened, expression somewhere between amused and shocked.
When I finished, he shook his head. “You’re serious?”
“Dead serious.”
“You realize you’re asking me to walk home commando, right?”
I shrugged. “I’ll be disgusted if that’s your only clean pair.”
He laughed and pulled a pair of blue boxers from his gym bag. “You got a Sharpie?”
I pulled one from my pocket. “Here.”
He grinned and signed them. “So you need a picture, too?”
“Yep.”
He handed me the boxers. “Let’s get this over with.”
I held the boxers up in one hand, stood next to him, and snapped a photo. He smiled—a relaxed, easy smile.
“Be nice to them,” he teased.
“Thanks,” I said, tucking the boxers into my bag.
I bolted out of the locker room, the list and my bag on one hand and the traffic cone on the other, heart hammering in my chest.
I was halfway across campus when I heard someone shout my name.
“(Y/N) wait!”
I turned
Luigi—now dressed—was jogging toward me.
“What else is on your list?”
I showed him the list.
He frowned. “These are easy.”
“Not when you’re under pressure.” I interjected.
“Let me help you.”
“You’re not supposed to help.”
“I don’t see a rule against it.” He smirked. “C’mon.”
I didn’t argue.
We made quick work of the rest:
✅ Try on the campus mascot costume? It stinks.
✅ Steal a UPenn banner? Done.
✅ Buy a random guy a drink at the closest bar? Luigi handled that part.
We talked as we walked between tasks. He told me about his frat initiation—doors locked, food and alcohol flowing, and seniors throwing impossible tasks at them.
“Deadly,” he joked.
“You survived.”
“Barely.” He grinned.
By the time we finished, I had enough minutes to spare.
Luigi walked me back to the sorority house.
“Well, I guess this means you’re officially Delta Nu,” he said, stopping at the steps.
“Yeah.”
“See you in class?”
I smiled. “Unless I skip to recover from this trauma.”
He laughed. “You’ll survive.”
I ran inside, dumped my evidence on the table, and collapsed onto the couch.
Missy’s eyes narrowed. “You got everything?”
“Everything,” I confirmed.
Her gaze shifted from Luigi’s face on the picture to his signature. Her smile tightened.
“So?”
Missy’s smile sharpened. “Alright.”
I just rolled my eyes.
I was safe. That’s all that mattered.

{ CONAN GRAY, 20, CIS MALE, HE/HIM } Is that OLIVER “OLLIE” INOUE? A SENIOR originally from WASHINGTON HEIGHTS, NY, they decided to come to Ogden College to study BUSINESS & COMPUTER SCIENCE on a ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP. They’re THE ERUDITE STONER on campus, but even they could get blamed for Greer’s disappearance.
pinterest x playlist [tag] x wanted connections [ coming soon ]
BASIC INFORMATION
Full name: Oliver Ren Inoue Nickname: Ollie, Olls Birthdate: January 25 Age: 20 Zodiac: Aquarius Sun, Libra Moon, Capricorn Rising SEE HIS FULL BIRTH CHART HERE Gender: Cis Man Pronouns: He/Him Sexual/Romantic Orientation: Bisexual/Homoromantic (homoflexible but mostly only likes men tbh) Ethnicity: Japanese & White Trope: The Erudite Stoner
How he Fits the Trope: Ollie is a genius, that’s what everyone in his life always said. He had the numbers for it, the test scores for it, the IQ for it, and his parents were always so proud. The Inoue family didn’t have much going for them, besides living paycheck to paycheck in a small two bedroom apartment. So they just wanted the most for their son, and it seemed like he was on the right track. They signed him up to join Mensa when he was in High School and everyone was so impressed. Ollie was bored. Who gave a shit if he tested well? He certainly didn’t, all those tests were so boring. Everything everyone wanted for him, and wanted him to do was so boring. So, he found ways to make his own fun, found friends that weren’t only interested in useless things like test scores. He started finding his fun in illicit substances (that completely expanded his mind, man!), and seeing how far he could push the boundaries of… legal things. Getting into drugs both helped him level out from the stress of everything that everyone wants for him, and brought something new and exciting into his life— sometimes both at the same time. So, he gets stoned out of his mind from time to time (most of the time), and maybe people don’t expect too much from him, but that doesn’t mean he’s not still that genius that his parents want him to be.

Shortcomings: Artistic things like music, and art. He loves that kind of thing but he’s not good at it. / Speaking about and addressing his feelings and emotions. And truly opening up to people. / He’s a bit cocky… But it doesn’t come from no where! Languages spoken: HIs parents have been speaking English and Japanese to him since he was a baby so he is fluent in both of those, but he’s only just now learning how to write Japanese. He also knows Spanish pretty fluently.

CONNECTIONS
Parents: Ren & Faye Inoue Positive Connections: Most people. Monty Richler is his best bro tho. Romantic Connections: :) Negative Connections: Like … 3 people
Connection with Greer: Ollie met Greer at a party their Freshman year, and offered her a hit. That’s how they met, and for the majority of their relationship that’s what it was. They’d smoke together, they’d do some molly together, or whatever he had on hand at the time, and vibe— they got along well. Generally it was not too different from most of Ollie’s relationships. Until she came to him for another reason. He was very smart, he was good at hacking, he needed money; could he get into school’s systems and get the answers to a very big exam coming up? Yes, he could. He’d done it before, so he did. When Greer got a little too busy to study, or do her own school work she came to him for help. A paper here, answers to a test there for her, and money for him. But why stop at just her? So a business was formed, and a very good business relationship, on top of the friendship. Honestly, he’s sad to see her go, she was buying a lot of shit from him by the end of the previous year. She was not just a friend, but a really good source of income.
QUICK CATCH UP
All Past Tasks Here !!
Ollie was voted Homecoming King after making a joke about promising everyone free drugs of his own stash (he did deliver).
Ollie & Monty decided to move their drug supply off campus once they realized that the cops were not leaving. It's now located in a house that is under New Construction.
Ollie got a clue with flight information to Portugal from the Haunted House. It matched with Parker's and the two of them turned them anonymously turned the info into the police thinking they'd do something with it. They haven't really.
Ollie was asked by the Naïve Newcomer (before he was expelled) if he could start looking into who this mysterious "G" person was. He did and all of his findings lead to Milo Navarro. Turns out he was wrong though, whoops.
Like everyone who turned one in, his time capsule video was leaked, where he may or may not have been admitting to having feelings for Monty. Who is to say what he was saying.
The cops decided to trust him after his interrogation went well. A bad decision on their part.
He was trapped in The Ski Chateau's kitchen pantry with Milo while Penny mysteriously died. He's pretty fucking shaken up about it.
Ollie threw a party with Link and Mari for their birthdays. Ollie left with Link and got a tattoo of his initials on his wrist.
At the Valentine's Social Ollie was sent a Valentine from G telling him if he sent a secret they would send him a clue. He sent a secret, he hasn't gotten anything back yet though.
During the Valentine's Social Ollie sent a vaguely illicit Valentine to Link that G then sent to Monty. It caused the two of them to fight and they stopped talking to each other over Spring Break.
While Ollie was going through the House of Mirrors at the Spring Carnival he saw and heard someone that sounded like Greer. This is the SECOND time he thinks he's seen Greer and it's getting creepy.
During the Spring Carnival Ollie apologized to Monty and confessed that he wanted them to date. Monty asked Ollie out and they started dating. Aw.
Ollie was sent a text from G to attend a Rave. First he was sent to a cemetery with Ash who might or might not think he's G now, but he doesn't know that.
At the Rave he and Anya attempted to put their brains together to find G but that lasted about five minutes before G said they were stupid (not what G actually said, but they might as well) and then sent everyone home.
Commencement happened at the end of the year and Ollie would rather not think about it.
He was on the second floor of the Commons talking to Eddie when it was set on fire, and he managed to escape with only a little smoke inhalation (but he's been training for that for years) so he was fine.
It was after when he got a text telling him that The Pollyanna, a friend and neighbor of his since they were children, had been arrested and was being blamed for the Fire, being G, Greer's disappearance, and the deaths that happened. He's been pretty fucked up over it.
He and Monty went on a poorly timed road trip over the summer and it went poorly ending in them breaking up.
Back at school and Ollie has been made Homecoming King for the second year in a row! Yay! The year is off to a great start.

Madrid Week 2: Taking Time
Hola a todxs! Niko here again, back for week 2 of studying abroad in Madrid. This week felt nearly as long as my first one in the city. Class started on Monday. Thankfully, schoolwork has been pretty light thus far, so I’ve had the spare energy and time to focus on adjusting to the new schedule, commute, and teaching/class style at UC3M, all while attempting to make new friends with Spanish, American, and International students from across Europe (and Oceania!). Also, I took a weekend trip to Granada in the southern region of Andalucía — more on that later.
SCHOOL STUFF (ACADEMICS?!)
With the first week now under my belt, I wanted to quickly touch on my academic experience so far in Spain. This semester, I’m taking a Spanish language class for international students, and three classes in English for a both national and international students: “Social groups and their cultural imaginaries” (a mix between philosophy and culture, INTERHUM 300 equivalent), “Materials Science and Engineering” (MATSCI 220 Equivalent), and “Databases and Structures” (EECS 400 Level Equivalent). Given that I pass 🙏, all of these classes should count towards my degrees (aerospace engineering major, international minor for engineers, computer science minor).
School at UC3M is quite different than it is in the states. Most notably, the grading system is unfamiliar. At Michigan, a big emphasis is put on required assignments that are due throughout the semester — homeworks, problem sets, mini projects, etc.. These required assignments force students to continuously engage with the content, which I feel improves focus and learning (if the assignments are completed with the right intention). At Carlos III, the final exam constitutes 60% of the final grade for the vast majority of classes, with the remaining 40% of “continuous assessment” depending on things like in-class quizzes and one-off assignments.
With no homework to keep me on track, I’m gonna have to pay close attention to make sure my classes don’t fall to the wayside with all of the 1,000,000 other distractions in Madrid (and Europe) vying for my attention. I’ve already decided to switch one class (Neural Networks) because I thought it would require a level of effort that I simply wasn’t prepared to put in while I’m abroad with bigger priorities than school (namely, exploration, self growth, meeting people, etc.).
This is a shift in itself that I’m going to have to get used to — for my entire life, performing well in school has been at the top of my list. However, while in Spain, all I need to do is pass (get a 5/10, 50% overall) for my credits to transfer with no effect on my GPA, so that’s what I’m shooting for now. I’m certain that this will cause some internal conflict (e.g.: a 60% on [x] quiz?! Oh no!!! tbh math 216 already got me over those bad grades tho lol) when things start to pick up, but I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
ON RELATIONSHIPS
Going into my study abroad experience, my biggest goal was to understand the culture of Madrid & Spain from a local point of view. I knew from studying in Buenos Aires that living in a different city can be a much more enriching experience than touring it for vacation, so long as I put in the effort. A big part of that goal was to make friends with people local to Madrid, along with other Americans*/ International students who shared that same mindset. I think that in explicitly setting this goal, I inadvertently put a lot of pressure on myself to make all these friends really quickly, in an environment and language I’m unfamiliar with, all while trying to adjust to and internalize a major lifestyle shift.
As a result, I think that — up until this week — this self-imposed pressure gave me unnecessary anxiety that inhibited me from being my true self. I spent time worrying about whether the Spanish students in my class would like me, if my Spanish was good enough to communicate with them, if they would judge me for being an American, how soon I should message the new person I met in the cafeteria so I wouldn’t appear too clingy… the list goes on. I was stressing and strategizing to make friends, when the best strategy is always to just be myself.
This is a lesson I’ve learned during my transition to Michigan, but being implanted into a new environment and University gave me a bit of a factory reset. I had to remind myself that I’ve only been here for 2.5 weeks. Directing my attention inwards instead of outwards will enable me to be fully present (and able to overcome the initial discomfort of making new relationships [see week 1 for discussion on discomfort]) when people that I can click with inevitably come along. Through this process, I’ll undoubtedly develop a stronger relationship with myself and increased comfort being alone, which is another personal goal of mine.
Funnily enough, that’s how things started to turn out in the second half of the first week. When I caught myself overthinking and was able to redirect my focus, I slowly started to reach out and become more friendly with some of the Spanish students in my culture class, and I met a group of Spaniards by chance that I really vibe with at the club on a Wednesday (oops, sorry it’s syllabus week :P ). Simultaneously, I’ve begun to get closer to some fellow American study abroad students. By no means have I found the perfect group of friend-soulmates that I’ll proceed to travel and experience Europe with for the rest of my 17 weeks in Spain, but that wasn’t something that I was ever expecting, anyways. Moving forward, I’m going to do my best to avoid resisting flow, always assuming positive intent to keep myself open to new interactions (check out what I mean by this by watching this video clip from a speech Mark Rober gave at the MIT graduation, I highly recommend the whole video), all the while prioritizing my own peace and happiness.
This weekend, I also visited Granada, a small town in the south of Spain famous for its Moorish influence and the incredible La Alhambra palace nestled in its hills. I might cover the trip in more detail next week, I guess we’ll see… but it was a beautiful weekend filled with beautiful architecture, beautiful sunsets, and great company. Per usual, check out the photo captions for some more context.
Until next week :)

*A LONG ASIDE ON THE WORD “AMERICAN”, for context & completeness
I would like to be clear about my use of the word "American". In English, there is no succinct way to say “Person from the United States of America”, unlike other nationalities (Spaniard, Argentinian, Norwegian, etc). American is the best word that we have. However, in conversations about US culture with people from other countries, I’ve been met with a similar critique in multiple instances (both with Europeans and South Americans). The Americas include the entire continent of North America and South America, which encompasses a huge variety of countries, cultures, and nationalities. When saying the word “American” while describing a person from the United States, we are inadvertently reinforcing the narrative that the United States is the most significant country across both continents and thus more righteously deserves the blanket term “American” over any other country in the region.
This conclusion is obviously more nuanced than what I’ve stated. The United States of America uses the word “America” in its name, which is likely where this blanket term came from. Also, I don’t think that the perpetuation of this US-centric language is due to intentional individual action, but rather a result of complicated cultural and etymological phenomena which I don’t have a comprehensive understanding of.
I won’t stop saying American in these blogs — primarily because saying “person from the United States” each time would likely distract from the points I'm trying to make — but I felt that an acknowledgement of this common criticism was important. In Spanish, Estados Unidos = United States, and US citizens are more precisely described as “Estadounidenses” (although the word “Americano” is still commonly used). When introducing myself to people from other countries, I always do my best to use the most precise language possible when referring to my nationality, which is one of the many ways I practice cultural humility. Stay tuned for another blog sometime this semester about how I go about practicing cultural humility, something that I think is very important for Americans who come from one of the most — if not the most — influential countries on earth (something that has also become apparent through my conversations).

Let me talk about math class because it’s been a constant struggle for over a year at this point.
My degree is science, so it makes sense that I would need to take some math classes. However, I hate the way my college conducts their math classes. It’s all online; I have not seen a single one of my professors in the 3 math classes I took. This is not how I learn. I need a person to guide me through the steps through an in-person lecture, that way I can ask them questions. A computer can’t answer my questions. And my math classes I took in the spring had tutors, I’ll give them that, but there’s no tutors over the summer. And this class doesn’t tell me how my quiz answers are wrong, which sucks because I don’t know what I need to study for my tests.
Also, the way you got into a level 100 math classes was taking a test. I failed that, and I had to take entry-level course. Which was stupid, because it was teaching the same things as the math class. Just put me in the math class at that point.
I could have avoided this if I took the actual algebra class during my associates, but instead I took algebra for liberal arts. I low-key regret that, but live and let learn.
Long story short, I’m probably dropping calculus. I’m nearing burnout, and the struggle with math is not helping. I’d rather focus on the two other courses I’m taking right now, especially once I start work in two weeks.

In the ever-evolving digital world, social media has become more than just a tool for sharing selfies and memes. For students, it's a dynamic space that fosters learning, collaboration, networking, and personal development. While there’s no shortage of social media platforms available today, choosing the right ones can be challenging. To help, we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 social media apps every student should be using in 2025 — not just for entertainment, but for education, growth, and staying connected.
1. LinkedIn: Your Professional Launchpad
Why It Matters to Students:
LinkedIn may not be the first app that comes to mind when thinking about social media, but it’s an absolute game-changer for students preparing for life after graduation. It’s a professional networking platform where students can build a digital resume, connect with industry professionals, and explore internships and job opportunities.
Key Features for Students:
Professional Profile Creation: Think of it as your digital resume. You can highlight your education, certifications, skills, and projects.
Networking: Connect with classmates, alumni, professors, and professionals from your dream companies.
Job Search: Use LinkedIn’s job search tool to find internships and entry-level positions tailored to your career interests.
LinkedIn Learning: Offers free and paid courses on everything from coding to public speaking.
Student Tip:
Start building your LinkedIn profile in your first year of college. Share your accomplishments and engage in meaningful content to grow your network over time.
2. Instagram: Visual Inspiration Meets Creativity
Why It Matters to Students:
Instagram is still one of the most influential platforms among students in 2025. While it’s popular for sharing photos and reels, it’s also a hub for student communities, educational creators, influencers, and even university pages that keep you updated on events and opportunities.
Key Features for Students:
Instagram Reels & Stories: Great for micro-learning, quick tips, and following student influencers who share useful hacks and content.
Study Pages: Many students create or follow studygrams — pages dedicated to study tips, motivation, and productivity.
Group Chats: Use Instagram DMs to create study groups or collaborate on college events.
Live Sessions: Many educators and mentors host Q&A sessions, tutorials, and discussions on trending topics.
Student Tip:
Curate your feed to follow creators that motivate and educate you — don’t let it become just a scrolling trap.
3. Discord: The Ultimate Study + Hangout App
Why It Matters to Students:
Discord started as a platform for gamers, but today it’s become one of the most versatile apps for students. Whether you want to set up a study server, hang out with classmates, or participate in niche academic communities, Discord makes it seamless.
Key Features for Students:
Servers & Channels: Create or join servers focused on topics like computer science, literature, design, or any subject of interest.
Voice & Video Chat: Host real-time study sessions, group calls, or virtual hangouts.
Screen Sharing: Useful for group projects, collaborative coding, or solving problems together.
Bots and Tools: Integrate productivity bots like Pomodoro timers, to-do lists, and quiz bots.
Student Tip:
Use Discord to form small study pods with classmates — it’s less formal than Zoom and often more productive.
4. YouTube: Your On-Demand University
Why It Matters to Students:
YouTube remains one of the best educational platforms available — for free. Whether you’re stuck on calculus or curious about marketing trends, you can find channels dedicated to your subject with in-depth tutorials and easy-to-understand explanations.
Key Features for Students:
Diverse Content: From 2-minute concept reviews to full lecture playlists.
YouTube Shorts: Bite-sized educational content ideal for quick revisions.
Live Classes and Webinars: Many educators and experts host free live sessions.
Channel Memberships: Some channels offer exclusive resources, Q&A sessions, and downloadable study materials.
Popular Student-Friendly Channels (2025):
Ali Abdaal (study tips and productivity)
CrashCourse (academic subjects)
Fireship (for computer science and tech)
Khan Academy (math, science, and more)
Student Tip:
Create custom playlists for each subject or topic to organize your revision and tutorials efficiently.
5. Reddit: Your Anonymous Learning Ally
Why It Matters to Students:
Reddit may not have the glitz of Instagram or the professionalism of LinkedIn, but it’s an underrated gem for students who want honest advice, community support, and in-depth discussions. It’s where students go when they want unfiltered opinions, answers, and academic camaraderie.
Key Features for Students:
Subreddits: Join communities like r/college, r/AskAcademia, r/engineeringstudents, or r/gradadmissions.
Ask Anything: Get real answers to questions about course selection, studying abroad, mental health, or life hacks.
Resource Sharing: Find links to books, study materials, and open-access journals.
AMAs (Ask Me Anything): Participate in Q&A sessions with professors, professionals, and grad students.
Student Tip:
Use Reddit with discretion — while it’s great for community insight, verify facts before taking action on serious academic or career decisions.
Honorable Mentions
While the above five are our top picks, here are a few others that can still be extremely useful depending on your goals:
X (formerly Twitter): Great for following academic professionals and university accounts.
Telegram: Offers large group chats and channels for notes, books, and exam updates.
TikTok: Educational creators are growing fast here, though it requires self-discipline to avoid endless scrolling.
Final Thoughts: Making Social Media Work for You
Social media can be both a distraction and a superpower — the difference lies in how you use it. The platforms listed above are transforming the student experience in ways we couldn’t have imagined a decade ago. From getting career guidance on LinkedIn to learning physics on YouTube or joining a coding community on Discord, there’s something out there for every learner.
Pro Tips for Healthy Social Media Use:
Set time limits for scrolling apps to stay productive.
Use notifications wisely — turn off non-essential alerts.
Follow accounts that add value to your academic and personal goals.
Take regular digital detox breaks to refresh your mind.
In 2025, being digitally smart is just as important as being book smart. So, take control of your social media, align it with your student goals, and let these platforms help you grow, learn, and connect.

What to do when:
depressed
no motivation
have test on wednesday, midterm on thursday, quiz on friday that haven't studied for
have philosophy paper due friday already got week extension for haven't started yet
have computer science assignment due friday haven't started yet
can't start computer science assignment until past 4 completed, only done one so far
been sick for a week and and an extra weekend
mental health is trashed
completely torpedoed personal life a month ago over something really stupid
too anxious about everything to make progress on anything
also too anxious to talk to profs about struggling
can't even tell the whole story of why personal life torpedoed because of sensitive topics involved
no therapist and waitlists are 6 months+
have to go home and deal with family from friday evening through to wednesday morning next week, knowing they'll poke about personal life but not being able to explain fully because sensitive topics again
only real community you have is in the university city but not at the university and very far away from hometown with family
so overwhelmed you just shut down
can't stop deflecting and avoiding responsibilities
probably going to fail out of program
can't even care though because everything is meaningless and i don't even want to be in this program anyway
only reason i'm still here is because i like the program's student society and the ring that i get if i graduate
been spending money on lottery tickets instead of anything useful because the scratching noise is the only thing that calms you anymore
know that in posting this your sister and your ex might see it but don't know where else to go
could go to advice reddit but post would probably be removed by mods and/or people wouldn't give helpful advice
everything feels pointless anyway with world as it is atm
feel bad for not feeling worse about that and just being numb to it
also feel bad for not trying hard enough to make it better or to do better myself
kinda just want to stop existing but only to the point of somewhat reckless carelessness not any actual ideas
just need to write everything out somewhere because otherwise going to scream
also have doctor's appt next week that will change nothing because the family doctor is retiring and can't be bothered to switch medications, just increase dosages
which we've already tried twice and isn't helping btw
and this is how i'm feeling while on the antidepressants and adhd medication
only thing i actually want to do is sleep and kinda strangely donate blood but i can't do the latter for another 2 months
sounding increasingly unhinged as post continues
oh i guess i also want to play league but i've managed to stick to my conviction of not allowing kernel level anticheats on my laptops for almost a year and it's kinda the only thing i've got going for me at this point
missed out on the one community i enjoy's events for two events in a row because sick
writing this all during a cs lecture because i can't even pretend that i am focused or understand what's going on
know that this is probably enough info to doxx me but can't bring myself to care
kinda hope one of my classmates or profs find this
feel bad about eating out a lot because of public speaking presentation from yesterday
likewise about not exercising because of my own group's public speaking presentation from last week
need to respond to people who were going to play pandemic legacy campaign with me to say it's cancelled because im too depressed
also need to read stuff for philosophy class in <1 hour but can't be bothered
might just talk to my philosophy prof about everything because she's pretty chill and it's a small class and it's not required for me to graduate so i can always drop the class if needed
also really don't want to fail the term though because it would fuck up scheduling with the few people that i actually know and i would just be even more alone
wish i could just start on things before they were due but can't even manage that after failing two courses last term
why can't i make my stupid brain learn
i want to just live at home and sleep and do nothing all day but living at home is even more stressful because my mom is always making me clean stuff if i'm "not doing anything important" and gets mad if i say that i'm too mentally exhausted from existing
could just leave and go sleep at the park nearby but then i'd be too out in the open
esp seeing as that park is very interlinked with my trauma
but also just don't want to have to deal with any people at all whatsoever
desk leaving angry red marks on my forearms while i type but can't be bothered to change my position
wanna go back to before i had awareness of the world around me and/or quarantine times when staying home doing nothing was normal
hate hate hate adult life i don't want it why can't i just be a child of a billionaire who is set for life in terms of money but doesn't have to talk to anyone including parents
why can't i just motivate myself like everyone else
realize i sound very much like an angsty 14 year old and hate myself even more for it
how does everyone else manage
actually found myself staring at the kitchen knives at a convenience store and thinking about how relieving it would be to run the edge of one over my skin and let myself bleed just a little bit before realizing how fucked up that is and forcing myself to walk away from the aisle
don't understand how my mental health has gotten this bad, it doesn't make any sense
why is it worse now than when i figured out what had actually happened was traumatic i thought i had processed most of it why now why now why now it doesn't make sense
i just want everything to stop, just for a moment, please
If you have any advice please share because idk what to do atp.

Student complains
How can you make a table with objectives only? there should be other categories. So that means my professor asked us to submit a Lesson Plan. I can present my materials later on anyway.
Whenever my cooperating teacher ask me to do a DLL, I only accomplish the planning. Because I know that the materials should be standardized. The reference that she gave me was incomplete. When I ask her where she gets the content of her lesson, she said she do research. I wasn't able to ask her if it's the same as the other teachers' research. She is only teaching 4 sections. I was informed that there are 20 in that grade level. When I listened to her discussion, majority of the content was not in the reference. And the focus is totally far from what I would probably do. Her quizzes focused on computation, problem solving. She thought math in science. 30% of the quiz is about conversion of numbers to exponential form. New method, I think, inclusive. To tap multiple intelligence?
She should have given me a contact to the other teachers so I can collaborate and do a lecture material with them. I tried giving her one as a reference on my second try. She should have given me their standardized lecture that I will put into a PowerPoint presentation. I am just an FS student who is assigned to observe and assist only. I am not a practice teacher yet. She should have told me. For me, the content of instruction materials is hers.
